Addiction to and overdose from prescription opioid painkillers is on the rise. Once someone is taking a long-term course of these painkillers, the chance of becoming addicted is about 25%.1
We’re working hard to get members treatment for their addiction. And, we’re improving our policies to reduce the chances of addiction. How? We’re making sure more members get mental health services in addition to medication therapy for their addiction. Our goal is to help our plans reduce the number of painkillers prescribed by 30% in 2019. Plus, we’re working with providers to set limits on the length of time painkillers can be used.1
